Fiber Optic MiniCourse: Reading An OTDR Trace

Gainer

OTDR

A gainer is a splice that shows a gain not a loss. The gain is seen in the fiber trace following the splice which is higher than the fiber trace before. Gainers are not real; they are caused by the fiber following the splice having higher backscatter, the physical effect of fiber loss that OTDRs use to make indirect measurements of fibers. If you look closely, you will usually see the fiber after the gainer has higher loss than the fiber before, showing it has higher backscatter and therefore higher loss.
