Fiber Optic MiniCourse: Reading An OTDR Trace

Connection

OTDR

A connection is a fiber joint made with two connectors. Connections have both loss and some reflectance so they can be spotted by the reflectance peak. The loss of a connection is shown by the lower trace of the fiber after it and the amount of that drop is the loss of the connection. Fusion splices should not have any reflectance but some mechanical splices may, although it should be minimal.
