Lesson:
Testing UTP Cable With A Wiremapper
Objectives:
From this lesson you should learn:
How to use these tools to strip cable to the bare fiber

Tester:
Wiremapper - with directions
Components:
2 Cat 5e patchcords - purchased
UTP cables terminated in earlier exercises, at least
one with plugs on each end (a patchcord) and one with
jacks on each end (a link)
Safety:

|

Always
wear safety glasses when doing any of
these exercises and dispose of all scraps
properly.

Exercise

1: Familiarize yourself with the wiremapper. A
wiremapper is a simple UTP cable tester that checks the
wiring of Cat 5e or Cat 6 UTP cables that are terminated
to ensure that each wire is connected to the correct pin
location on the plug or jack at the end.. The wiremapper
has two parts, a tester and a remote. The cable is
connected between them. Since the tester has Modular 8-pin
jacks, it can test a patchcord or your cable with plugs on
each end directly. If you have a link with jacks on each
end, you need two patchcords (the purchased ones in the
components list above) to test that cable. If you do not
remember wiremapping from the Premises Cabling course, you
can read the section on wiremapping in the Basic
Skills Lab workbook.

2. Using the wiremapper, test both your purchased
patchcords to familiarize yourself with the wiremapper's
operation.

3. Use the wiremapper to test the plug-plug cable
(patchcord) you made in the plug exercise.

4. Connect
your two purchased patchcords which you tested above to
the jack to jack link cable you made in the jacks exercise
and test your cable.
Repeat for all cables you terminate.
Record
your results on your scorecard.
You
have successfully completed this exercise when you
have been able to strip the jacket and both buffer
coating layers from the fiber without breaking the
fiber.
Clean up all your fiber
scraps and dispose of them in a container like a used
take-out coffee cup marked "Fiber Scraps"!
After successfully stripping fiber several times, fill
in your
Scorecards
(PDF).
