Always wear safety glasses when doing any of these exercises and dispose of all scraps properly.

Exercise

1: Cut off a length of Cat 5e cable about 1meter or 3 feet long

2. Strip ~50mm - 2" - jacket from one end of the cable
as you did in the previous exercise

3. Untwist all the pairs leaving about 13mm or 1/2 inch twisted

4.
Look closely at the jacks. The color code for each wire location is shown on the jack. There are two shown "A" for TIA-568A" pinout and "B" for TIA-568B" pinout. Since we did the plug in TIA-568B, we must to do the jack also as TIA-568B, so follow that color code. The color codes may not agree with the color codes in drawings for cables or plugs because jacks often have twists inside the jack to prevent crosstalk, so the wiring is not the same as the standard. Use the color codes on the jack.

5. Following the color codes, press each wire into the right location on the jack with your fingers.

6. Examine the punchdown tool. Note the blade has two sides, one will punch down wires, the other side will punch down thewire and cut off the excess wire. When you use this tool, make certain the cut side of the tool is on the side where you want to cut off the excess wire!

7. Using the punchdown tool, punchdown each wire and cut off the excess wire.

8. Once you have completed this jack, follow the procedures again to install a jack on the other end of the cable.

9.  When both jacks are installed g
o to the wiremapping exercise to test your cable.

You have successfully completed this exercise when you have been able to strip the jacket and both buffer coating layers from the fiber without breaking the fiber.

Clean up all your fiber scraps and dispose of them in a container like a used take-out coffee cup marked "Fiber Scraps"!

After successfully stripping fiber several times, fill in your
Scorecards (PDF).
